This Healthy Apple Butter recipe is made in the slow cooker with no added sugar! It's flavored with traditional fall spices and is SCD, paleo, whole30, gluten free, grain free, and dairy free.
The key to a delicious apple butter recipe is getting the right balance of sweetness and spices.
The result is an easy, slow cooker apple butter that's rich, sweet, and basically tastes like fall in a jar!
What is apple butter?
Apple butter is almost like a jam.
The main ingredient is apples which are seasoned, cooked, blended, then cooked again until nice and thick!
What can I do with apple butter?
You can do so much with apple butter but here are a few of my favorites!
- Stir it into yogurt.
- Use it to top Pumpkin Pancakes or Spiced Waffles.
- Add it to a cheese or charcuterie board.
- Spread it between cake layers.
- Swirl it into frosting.
- Spread it on muffins or bread.
- Use it in my Apple Cider Layer Cake.
- It can even be used in savory chicken or pork dishes!
Ingredients
- Fuji Apples - I've made apple butter with various combinations of apples and I've found that using Fuji apples yields the sweetest results without needing any added sugar.
- Ground Cinnamon
- Allspice
- Ground Nutmeg
- Lemon Juice
Directions
Core and thinly slice the apples.
(If you have a high speed blender such as a Vitamix, there's no need to peel the apples.)
Place the sliced apples into the slow cooker along with the lemon juice and spices.
Use a wooden spoon to give it a good stir.
Secure the top and cook on low for eight hours.
Transfer the apples, which at this stage should look like applesauce, to a blender and blend until smooth.
Pour the mixture back into the slow cooker and set the lid ajar.
Cook an additional four hours, stirring occasionally, until reduced by half.
The end apple butter should be smooth and thick.
Tips:
- If you do not own a high speed blender, peel the apples before coring and slicing.
- This healthy apple butter can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks and in the freezer for up to six months.
